look and feel for shoppers. >> susie: a deal to create a new defense giant is dead. earlier today, britain's b.a.e. systems and europe's e.a.d.s. called off their merger plans. both sides blamed concerns by european governments, especially germany, over how the potential tie-up would be structured. the deal between e.a.d.s. and b.a.e. systems would have created the world's biggest defense company by sales. some industry watchers say it could have spurred more consolidation among american defense companies. >> if this merger had come together it would have been pressure on the u.s. defense contractors to get together, to consolidate, as a counter balance to the new combination. but without the merger there is not a lot of pressure to consolidate. in fact, if we get a romney presidency there may be almost no pressure on defense contractors. susie: as for shares of the big u.s. defense contracrs today, they followed the broader market lower. boeing, general dynamics, lockheed martin and northrop grumman all down about 1%. >> susie: for many americans, >> susie: for many americans, co

%, increase spending on the defense budget by $2 trillion, increase medicare above ryan's idea above $716 billion. you can't take in less and spend more and balance it. that's why mitt romney, buy a $2 calculator and you'll see your plan doesn't work. >> but you're forgetting, you know, we never hear where conservatives want to spend. he wants to spend on defense. he gave a speech to the virginia military institute where he talked about if i'm president i'll buy 11 ships and including three submarines. that's a lot of money. >> the admirals don't even want the ships. just the military industrial complex wants to make the ships. >> do you want to take this one? >> you got the line. we're going to rebuild spending on the homeland. >> my bad, yeah. >> in all seriousness. >> because al qaeda's got the submarines threatening. >> governor, you're an elected official. you know when you run on a plan, you can't get -- there's a danger in getting so specific up front that you give away the house before you've even been elected into office. so mitt romney has laid down the principles by which he's

it was a complex assault. the compound's first line of defense easily breached. according to one of the libyan guards who was stationed at the gate, armed with only a radio, the assault happened simultaneously from three different directions. he says that he initially heard chanting growing increasingly louder and then suddenly the gunfire, the rocket-propelled grenades and other heavy machine gunfire all began attacking the compound. this is where ambassador chris stevens slept. part of a small suite also meant to be a makeshift safe room. here on the floor between the bed and the chair is where cnn found the ambassador's journal. it is also the same room where the ambassador was located hours after the attack first began. separated by smoke from his security detail. the u.s. initially said the assault was the result of a demonstration turned violent. >> putting together the best information that we have available to us today. our current assessment is that what happened in benghazi was, in fact, initially a spontaneous reaction to what had just transpired hours before in cairo, almost a copy

. debo adegbile is the acting president and director-counsel of the n.a.a.c.p. legal defense and educational fund, which filed an amicus brief in this case. and richard kahlenberg is a senior fellow at the century foundation. he wrote a recent report arguing for race-neutral admission policies that he says foster diversity. you were at the court, debo. what's at stake under coming classes of rising freshmen and their families seeking admission to public universities in this case? >> well, the stakes are very high. it's clear that everybody recognized today that diversity in higher education is a compelling interest. it's something that benefit all the-- all the students benefit from-- blark white, latino, asian. everybody benefits from these cross-racial interactions. and too many of our high schools are racially identified. there's lot of residential segregation leading to segregation in school, not by law but by practice. the result is too many kids don't have these interactionsess until they get to college and are able to learn from each other and break down stereotypes. t

spent those two weeks doing what he intended to do rather than playing defense. i do know that focus groups, both romney campaign ran and the obama campaign ran showed these remarks really alienated independent voters and even weak republicans. which indicates to me that this comes up again in the debate and advertising, it will remind people. they forgot about it or responding to the debate. host: let's go to phone calls. barb, democratic caller you're on the air. caller: i would like to say that romney expressed his real feeling about the 47%. it cannot be ignored. also understand that he signed grover norquist pledge. if he did that, he cannot represent 100% of the population because if you say that you're going to ignore the situation that the country is in, you cannot say that you unequivocally ignore taxes and to get income to support the country. with that, he could not represent me and the middle class and or poor people. host: we'll leave it there. john in north carolina, tweets in this though. the 53% are not in the least offended by the comment which was by and large t
